This course will be designed with fun
being the driving factor. It is winter
and we want everyone to be safe and have
fun. It will be challenging due to the
conditions and expect a few surprises
along the way. Check points will be pre
marked on your maps but you will be required
to navigate through all parts of the course.
The race will contain most of the disciplines
of a warm weather race in a sprint format
of 4-5 hours. Divisions for this race
are male (MM), female (FF), and coed (MF)
two person teams. A support crew is not
needed but spectators are welcome. Teams
will be required to navigate during each
stage of the race using provided pre-marked
topographical maps, supplemental trail
maps and specific course directions depending
on the discipline. Teams must locate and
check in at each of the required checkpoints
during each discipline of the entire race.
Canoe: There won't be
any canoeing unless I can talk the ski
hill into letting us bomb down the hill
in an aluminum canoe.
Bike: DUE
TO THE LARGE AMOUNT OF SNOW THE BIKE COURSE
HAS BEEN SHORTENED AND WILL NOW BE ON
FLAT TERRAIN. The mountain biking
portion will be approximately 3 miles
in length. The course will be groomed
(hard packed)??? snow .
Snowshoe/Orienteering:
WITH THE SNOW
IN THE WOODS NOW VERY DEEP THIS WILL PROVE
TO BE THE HARDEST SECTION OF THE COURSE.
The snowshoe section will be 4-8 miles
in length and will be both on and off
trail. This will also be the orienteering
section. Orienteering will be done from
pre-marked maps, just know how to read
and follow a compass and you'll be all
set. We will have approximately 50 pairs
of ATLAS snow shoes available on reservation
or first come first serve basis.
Trail Running:
You
will be running on a semi groomed trail
for approximately 5 miles. No snowshoes
are allowed on this leg although you can
wear traction devices such as Kahtoola's
or Yax Trax etc.. if so desired. Look
for a nice little surprise during this
section.
Cross Country Skiing: Skiing will
be on groomed trails approximately 5 miles
in length (short course is available )and
you will be able to skate ski or classic
your choice. Rental skiis are available
at Hanson Hills or the Cross Country Ski
shop located behind the Holiday Inn.
Surprise Event:
Expect
an unusual event to be disclosed race
morning. No special gear or preperation
is necessary just a good sense of humor.
Transition
Area: This
race will Start and Finish just west of
the main lodge at the old Bears Bowmen
building. Racers will be able to use the
facility to warm themselves between legs
if they desire and we will also try and
have an outside bonfire going during the
event. All gear will be staged outside
the lodge in a pre marked area. This building
will also be the site of the awards banquet.
Cut-off Time: Teams
must Finish the course within 5 hours
to be considered a ranked team. There
will be Mandatory cut-off times at certain
points on the course, any team failing
to make these cut-offs will be given directions
to jump ahead on the course so that they
may complete as much as possible of the
event. All “short” course
participants will still be officially
ranked in the final order but they may
not finish ahead of any team completing
the whole course within the time limit
Weather: Race will be
run regardless of weather
Prizes: TBD.
